The Gaucrete Pilot Project was recently launched at Shrimad Rajchandra Jivamaitridham (JMD). This initiative repurposes cow dung into eco-friendly bricks, that can absorb radiation and have natural temperature regulation properties. Over 1000 tonnes of cow dung is produced at Shrimad Rajchandra Jivamaitridham annually. The Gaucrete Pilot Project demonstrates innovative approaches to waste management.
Gaucrete bricks are manufactured through a simple yet effective three-step process. Firstly, cow dung is meticulously mixed with locally sourced riverine or alluvial soil and hydrated limestone or organic ash in specific proportions. Subsequently, the mixture is shaped into brick-sized dough and placed into moulds, where it begins to take form. Finally, the raw bricks are sun-dried, eliminating the need for smoke-emitting furnaces typically used in traditional brick-making processes.
The project gained momentum during the Global Youth Festival 2023, where youth were sensitised to the potential of cow dung in modern society. Pujya Gurudevshri’s visit to the stall and his interaction with participants further fueled enthusiasm. His inspirational presence prompted the youth to create Raj-inscribed bricks, infusing the activity with joy and purpose. Through collective effort and spirited engagement, over 1500 bricks were produced during the festival, marking a significant success for the project. These bricks will be used in construction of animal welfare infrastructure. It was a step towards a circular economy by utilising animal waste in a way that ultimately benefits those animals themselves.
Through their active participation at the Global Youth Festival, young individuals showcased their dedication to environmental stewardship and community development, setting a precedent for collaborative action in the pursuit of a greener future.
