Shrimad Rajchandra Love and Care has initiated a pioneering pilot project focused on cultivating Stevia, a natural sweetener with transformative potential for health practices. Stevia, a resilient semi-humid subtropical plant, has been selected for cultivation due to its adaptability and natural sweetness. This project marks the first instance of Stevia cultivation in South Gujarat, leveraging locally nurtured species that are acclimatised to the microclimate of Dharampur.
The cultivation process involves meticulous attention to soil conditions, with a pH range of 6.5-7.5 in well-drained red and sandy loam soil preferred. Medium-fertile heavier soils accelerate growth. Notably, Stevia contains no sweetening compounds listed in conventional sweeteners and offers no caloric benefits, making it a natural non-nutritive sweetener.
Youth Engagement:
The project fostered enthusiastic participation from youth during the Global Youth Festival. Activities included transplanting original parent Stevia roots into polished coco bowls, planting Stevia seeds in plantable dung pots, and crafting plantable diyas. These hands-on experiences instilled a sense of respect for plants and promoted sensitivity towards nature.
