Shrimad Rajchandra Animal Nursing Home (SRANH) recently undertook a case involving the rescue and rehabilitation of a two-year-old male pigeon weighing 225g. The pigeon was presented with a traumatic rupture of the crop and leakage of ingesta from the affected site.
Crop rupture refers to the tearing or breach in the crop, which is a part of the bird’s digestive system located at the base of the esophagus. It serves as a storage organ for food before it enters the stomach for digestion. A rupture in the crop can lead to leakage of ingested food and other complications, necessitating immediate veterinary intervention.
Veterinary experts at the nursing home, swung into action for a surgical intervention. The primary objective was to close the acquired crop fistula, which involved delicately addressing the abnormal connection between the crop and the surrounding tissues. This procedure required precision and expertise to ensure successful closure and prevent further complications. Through meticulous attention to detail and skilled execution, the abnormal connection was effectively closed, facilitating the bird’s recovery process.
The successful outcome underscores the importance of prompt intervention and skilled surgical techniques required in treating traumatic injuries in birds. Over the years, Shrimad Rajchandra Nursing Home has been able to offer timely treatment to several animals in distress.
